N-Dansyl-D-phenylalanine is a derivative of the amino acid D-phenylalanine that has been modified with a dansyl group at the amino (N) terminus. Given that the dansyl group is a fluorophore, this compound can be used in fluorescence spectroscopy, as well as in various types of analytical methods including chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, and mass spectrometry. It also serves as a probe in the study of enzymatic activity, specifically enzymes that act on amino acids and peptides, such as peptidases or proteases. Because it contains a D-enantiomer of an amino acid, this compound can be used in studies that investigate chiral recognition, either in biological systems or in chiral separation techniques like chromatography. It is also used for the preparation of N-sulfonylamino acid derivatives as MMP (metalloproteinase) inhibitors.
