スーパーオキシドラジカルアニオンは、ミトコンドリア呼吸の有毒な副産物であり、好気性生物によって代謝された酸素の約1～4％から生成される。SOTS-1はアゾ化合物であり、水溶液中で熱分解し、一定の制御された速度でスーパーオキシドラジカルアニオンを生成することができる。より具体的には、SOTS-1は熱分解して中間体を形成し、この中間体は拡散制御限界で酸素と反応してスーパーオキシドラジカルアニオンを生成する。SOTS-1から中間体への崩壊は一次速度論に従い、生理的pHと温度で4900秒の半減期を示す1,2。これにより、生体内の条件に近い制御された環境で、生物学的に関連した系に対するスーパーオキシドの影響を研究することができる。
