3,3',4,4'位に4個の重水素原子を含み、GC-またはLC-質量分析法によるPGA2の定量用内部標準物質として使用される。ゴルゴニアンコーラルに天然に存在するプロスタグランジンで、自己防衛に働くと考えられている。一般に哺乳類には存在せず、ほとんどのバイオアッセイでは生物学的効力は低いが、若干の抗ウイルス/抗腫瘍活性を示す1。25 µMの濃度で、PGA2はNIH 3T3細胞のG1およびG2/M期の細胞周期進行を阻害する2。また、ナトリウム利尿特性を有する血管拡張剤として作用することが示されている3。
