不飽和の長鎖炭化水素は昆虫のクチクラに存在し、フェロモンとして作用する。成熟したショウジョウバエでは、ある種のクチクラ炭化水素は性的に二型である：オスは23-Cと25-Cのモノエン、メスは27-Cと29-Cのジエンを合成する。これらの脂質はそれぞれオスの性行動を制御する上で特異的な役割を果たしており、ジエンは求愛を刺激する。7(Z),11(Z)-ペンタコサジエンは25-C炭化水素であり、成熟したショウジョウバエのメスのクチクラ上に低量に存在する。7(Z),11(Z)-ペンタコサジエンの増加と7,11-ノナコサジエンの並行減少をもたらす雌特異的エロンガーゼ（eloF）の枯渇は、ショウジョウバエの交尾を著しく減少させる。このことは、7(Z),11(Z)-ペンタコサジエンが抗媚薬として作用する可能性を提起している。
