T2-cadherin Activators

T2-cadherin is a protein that is part of the cadherin superfamily, a group of proteins known for their role in mediating calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion. Cadherins are critical for the maintenance of tissue structure and the regulation of cellular processes such as morphogenesis, differentiation, and migration. They are characterized by their extracellular cadherin repeats, which are involved in homophilic binding interactions (binding to the same type of molecule on another cell).T2-cadherin, also known as cadherin-13 or CDH13, is atypical within the cadherin family because it lacks the transmembrane domain that is typically found in classical cadherins, and thus, it is attached to the cell membrane via a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor. This difference suggests that T2-cadherin may have unique functions or mechanisms of action compared to other cadherins.

CDH13 is expressed in various tissues and has been implicated in diverse biological processes. In the nervous system, it is thought to play a role in the establishment and maintenance of specific neuronal connections. In the cardiovascular system, T2-cadherin has been linked to the regulation of vascular endothelial function and may have a role in atherosclerosis. It also has been associated with adipogenesis and the regulation of body weight.Genetic studies have identified associations between polymorphisms in the CDH13 gene and several diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, and neuropsychiatric disorders. These associations highlight the potential role of T2-cadherin as a modulator of disease risk and suggest that it may be a target for intervention.
