SEE ALSO...

α-defensin 5 Antibody (8c8) is a mouse monoclonal IgG2b kappa light chain antibody that detects the alpha-defensin 5 protein of human origin by western blotting (WB), immunoprecipitation (IP), and immunofluorescence (IF). α-defensin 5 (8c8) antibody is available in both non-conjugated and various conjugated forms, including agarose, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), phycoerythrin (PE), fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), and multiple Alexa Fluor® conjugates. Alpha-defensin 5, a member of the human neutrophil defensins (HNPs), is a small, cationic, cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptide that plays a crucial role in the innate immune response, particularly in combating infectious agents such as bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses. Alpha-defensin 5 is synthesized as inactive precursors and requires proteolytic cleavage by matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) for activation. Alpha-defensin 5 is secreted by Paneth cells located in the crypts of the small intestine, where alpha-defensin 5 is also referred to as cryptidin in mice. Alpha-defensin 5 is essential for maintaining the integrity of the gastrointestinal mucosal surface, especially during states of intestinal inflammation, as alpha-defensin 5 helps to protect against microbial invasion. Alpha-defensin 5′s ability to modulate the gut microbiome and influence local immune responses underscores alpha-defensin 5′s importance in gastrointestinal health and disease.
