Chorionic somatomammotropin hormone 1 (CSH1), also known as placental lactogen or chorionic growth hormone-prolactin, is a protein encoded by the CSH1 gene in humans. As a member of the somatotropin/prolactin family of hormones, CSH1 plays a significant role in the regulation of maternal and fetal metabolism, as well as fetal growth and development during pregnancy. It is produced by the placenta and acts in a manner similar to both growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL).CSH1 has a structure closely related to that of human growth hormone but has evolved to serve functions critical to the gestational period. One of the key roles of CSH1 is to modulate the metabolic state of the mother during pregnancy to facilitate the supply of nutrients to the growing fetus. CSH1 stimulates lipolysis in maternal adipose tissue, leading to the release of free fatty acids which can be used as an energy source by the mother, thereby conserving glucose and amino acids for use by the fetus.
Additionally, CSH1 has lactogenic activity; it prepares the mammary glands for milk production and may influence breast development during pregnancy. It also has insulin-like growth factor (IGF) promoting activity, which contributes to the anabolic environment required for fetal growth by increasing the availability of nutrients.Furthermore, CSH1 is involved in modulating the maternal immune system to support the immunological tolerance of the fetus. The exact mechanisms of this action are not entirely understood, but it is an area of considerable interest for understanding pregnancy's successful immunological adaptation.
