U 82836E is a free radical scavenger and antioxidant which becomes cytotoxic at higher concentrations. It is a second-generation lazaroid inhibitor of iron-dependent lipid peroxidation in rat brain cells (IC50 = 0.6 µM). U 82836E shows neuroprotective activity in a mouse head injury model (MHI) and causes a reduction in cyanide-induced cell death in rat cortical neurons. At higher concentrations, however, U 82836E has been shown to reduce the viability of rat brain endothelial cells (RBE4, IC50 = 0.032 mM).
