Tubacin is a selective inhibitor of HDAC6 via inhibition of the second deacetylase domain (DD2). Tubacin does not inhibit HDAC6 histone deacetylase activity. Instead, it reversibly inhibits α-tubulin deacetylation. Tubacin increases α-tubulin acetylation levels with no effect on histone acetylation or cell cycle progression.

(PubMed 25976407) observed that inhibiting the activity of HDAC6 with Tubacin, a specific HDAC6 inhibitor, reduced the oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD)-induced necroptosis of cultured rat cortical neurons.
