Silicon dioxide has historically been called amorphous. A naturally occurring microcrystalline silica which has been finely ground. It is formed when silicon is exposed to oxygen. Employed in the extraction of DNA and RNA due to its ability to bind to the nucleic acids under the presence of chaotropes.
