Pyridoxal Isonicotinoyl Hydrazone is a cell-permeable, non-toxic, iron (Fe3+) chelator of the aroyl hydrazone class that exhibits high chelation efficacy. Highly effective in mobilizing Fe3+ from cells and even at low concentrations, prevents its uptake from transferrin. Pyridoxal Isonicotinoyl Hydrazone exhibits similar binding affinity and specificity as Desferrioxamine, but has greater access to mitochondrial iron. Prevents iron-mediated oxyradical formation and minimizes tissue damage. Reported to useful in studies of the management of iron overload disease. Pyridoxal Isonicotinoyl Hydrazone inhibits the induction of heme-containing indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase activity.

(PubMed 18456387) found that treatment of human beta-thalassemic erythrocytes with the iron chelator, Pyridoxal Isonicotinoyl Hydrazone, resulted in significant depletion of membrane-associated iron and reduction of oxidative stress, as evaluated by methemoglobin levels. When administered to beta-thalassemic mice, iron chelators mobilized erythrocyte membrane iron, reduced cellular oxidation, and prolonged erythrocyte half-life. The treated thalassemic mice also showed improved hematological abnormalities. -SCBT Publication Review
