MDL-28170 is a cell permeable selective inhibitor of Calpain 1, a Ca2+-dependent cysteine protease which has been implicated in apoptosis of immune cells as well as neuronal cells. MDL-28170 also inhibits cathepsin B. Additionally, this compound has been shown to be able to cross the blood-brain barrier and inhibit brain cysteine protease activity, therefore potentially protecting against cortical neuronal damage. Also proven to prevent anoxia in murine optic nerves. MDL-28170 is an inhibitor of Gamma-secretase and Calpain 2.
