MCI-186, also known as 3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-5-one, is a free radical scavenger that has been shown to contain protective properties towards murine brain ischemia. In vitro this compound has been reported to decrease cell death in murine models. Mechanistic studies suggest that MCI-186 enhances neuronal growth factor (NGF) protein levels which are essential for neuronal growth and survival. Furthermore, the enhancement of NGF expression in astrocytes has been thought to be done via the c-Jun N-terminal Kinase (JNK) pathway.
