Glycogen is an inert carrier which significantly increases the efficiency of extracted DNA and RNA by ethanol precipitation. It is an analogue of starch, has a similar structure to amylopectin, and functions as a secondary long-term energy storage. Glycogen is suitable as a carrier substance for nucleic acids precipitation.
