5-Azacytidine is a potent growth inhibitor and a cytotoxic agent. 5-Azacytidine acts as a demethylating agent by inhibiting DNA methyltransferase (Dnmt), forming covalent adducts with cellular DNMT1 depleting enzyme activity. 5-Azacytidine also improves the efficiency of reprogramming of stem cells and induces differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into cardiomyocytes.

Wu Z; et alWu Z; et al. (PubMed ID: 26403224) determined that 5-azacytidine, in combination with netropsin, increased and sustained the expression of CDKN2A, thus suppressing growth in KMT2A-AFF1-expressing cell lines. -SCBT Publication Review
