QUICK LINKS

Selenous acid is the principal oxoacid of selenium. Analogous to sulfurous acid, Selenous acid is readily isolated and forms upon the addition of selenium dioxide to water. The structural foundation of Selenous acid is that of a crystalline solid, seen as pyramidal molecules. Selenous acid is a diprotic acid in solution. Commercially, Selenous acid is used in the cold-bluing process to color and protect steel. Selenous acid may also be able to chemically darken copper, brass, and bronze, producing a rich patina. Selenous acid is a major component of Mecke reagent drug testing.
