Potassium hexacyanoferrate(III), an electron acceptor, has been used in experiments to determine dopamine hydrochloride. Mechanistic studies suggest that this agent is deoxidized to Fe(II) by dopamine hydrochloride at pH 4.0. Fe(II) has been reported to then react with Potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) to form a soluble prussian blue which can be viewed by a spectrophotometer at an absorption maximum of 735 nm.
