Pizotifen malate, a derivative of benzocycloheptathiophene, is a tricyclic compound found to be a potent inhibitor of SR-2 receptor activity. In addition, it has been found to display vasoconstrictor activity in vivo. Studies on mice suggest that Pizotifen malate may have embryotoxic effects due to decreased value of mitotic indices in bone marrow cells. Pizotifen malate has also been reported to have acute antagonistic affects on central muscarinic receptors.

(PubMed 20884459) developed an isocratic reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method for quantification of Pizotifen malate in pharmaceutical solid dosage formulations. The method showed high sensitivity with good linearity (r(2)= 0.99997) over the tested concentration range of 0.0020-0.0300 mg/ml for Pizotifen malate.
