Phenylmethylsulfonyl Fluoride (PMSF) is an irreversible inhibitor of serine proteases, such as trypsin, chymotrypsin and thrombin. Phenylmethylsulfonyl Fluoride affords alkenes by reacting with carbonyl compounds and causes sulfonylation of the active-site serine residues. Phenylmethylsulfonyl Fluoride (PMSF) also inhibits most cysteine proteases like papain. Phenylmethylsulfonyl Fluoride is commonly used in the preparation of cell lysates to inhibit protein digestion. Phenylmethylsulfonyl Fluoride can substitute for diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) (sc-203922). Phenylmethylsulfonyl Fluoride also inhibits metalloproteases and aspartic proteases. Phenylmethylsulfonyl Fluoride is a widely used fatty acid amid hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor for pretreatment of brain membrane preparations when testing CB1 receptor activity.
