A non-ionic detergent used for many applications in biochemistry. Used to isolate and purify of gap junction channels. Completely solubilizes membrane-embedded phosphorhodopsin. Used to resolve NADH: ubiquinone oxidoreductase from bovine heart mitochondria into two subcomplexes.
