Hypericin is isolated from Hypericum perforatum L. (St. John′s Wort). Hypericin can be additionally isolated via irradiation of oxypenicilliopsin produced by Penicilliopsis clavariaeformis. Hypericin is a potent and selective inhibitor of protein kinase C (PKC) and additionally reported to inhibit CKII, MAP Kinase, Insulin R, EGFR, PI-3 Kinase. Hypericin is also noted to possess antiviral activity and is of interest in HIV studies. Hypericin is of interest in studies investigating photodynamic treatment of tumors and has been reported to be cytotoxic to some tumor cell lines when Hypericin is photoactivated.
