GM1 Pentasaccharide sodium salt is a semisynthetic form of Ganglioside GM1, a sialic acid-containing glycolipid. Ganglioside GM1 is a component of the cell plasma membrane known to modulate cell signal transduction. Ganglioside GM1 can be a useful marker of cell types and antigens. It has been reported to spontaneously form small homogeneous vesicles without any protein templating. In response to ganglioside GM1, it has been reported that T cells from Guillain-Barrε syndrome patients produce interferon-gamma, a cytokine that is critical for the formation of adaptive immunity against bacterial or viral infections.

(PubMed 24122305) used direct electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) assay to investigate the stepwise binding of the GM1 Pentasaccharide (GM1os) to the cholera toxin B subunit homopentamer (CTB5) and to establish conclusively whether GM1os binding is cooperative. Analysis of the apparent association constants provides direct and unambiguous evidence that GM1os binding exhibits small positive cooperativity. Binding was found to be sensitive to the number of ligand-bound nearest neighbor subunits, with the affinities enhanced by a factor of 1.7 and 2.9 when binding occurs next to one or two ligand-bound subunits, respectively. -SCBT Publication Review
