Fusaric acid is a small molecule inhibitor of DBH (dopamine β-hydroxylase), an enzyme responsible for the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine. Reports indicate that Fusaric acid exposure will decrease levels of norepinephrine while slightly increasing levels of dopamine in the brain. Serotonin levels are affected by the respective levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, and a slight increase in serotonin level has also been correlated with Fusaric acid activity. Fusaric acid is also observed to induce inhibition of dopamine and norepinephrine synaptosomal uptake.
