Deferiprone, also described as 1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxypyrid-4-one, is a hydroxypyrid-4-one compound utilized as a specific chelator of iron in biological systems. Deferiprone has been described in studies investigating the excretion of iron in iron overloaded systems, and the excreted chelated species in a study of iron overloaded rabbits demonstrates a specificity of Deferiprone for iron over copper, zinc, calcium and magnesium.
