D-myo-Inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate is a second messenger produced in cells by phospholipase C and signals the release of Ca2+ from intracellular stores. Binds to one of several Ins(1,4,5)P3 receptors resulting in the opening of calcium channels.

(PubMed 6607924) tested the possible involvement of D-myo-Inositol-1,4,5-triphosphate hexapotassium salt (Ins(1,4,5)P3), in intracellular Ca2+ mobilization of saponin-permeabilized hepatocytes. Addition of Ins(1,4,5)P3 caused a rapid Ca2+ release from non-mitochondrial, vesicular stores. Experiments using 32P-labeled Ins(1,4,5)P3 indicated that Ca2+ reaccumulation was associated with dephosphorylation of this compound. -SCBT Publication Review
