D-myo-Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (caged), trisodium salt, is a photolabile Ins(1,4,5)P3 derivative with a cage on position 4, which does not show biological activity until photochemical destruction of the cage. A short light pulse (254 or 360nm) releases active Ins(1,4,5)P3 within a second, thus mimicking the rapid responses of the receptor/phospholipase C signalling system in the cell. Since this approach does not (directly) trigger other signaling events, such as protein kinase C (PKC) activation after receptor-mediated diacylglycerol (DAG) formation, this provides a tool for dissecting signaling pathways. D-myo-Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (caged), trisodium salt, is not metabolized by endogenous phosphatase.
