Crotononitrile, mixture of cis and trans is a reactive compound, and its mechanism of action is based on its ability to react with a variety of substrates. It is able to react with many functional groups, including amines, alcohols, and carboxylic acids. It is also able to form a variety of covalent bonds, including carbon-carbon and carbon-nitrogen bonds. Crotononitrile is employed in the synthesis of agrochemicals, steroids and terpenes, as well as a variety of polymers, such as polyamides, polyesters, and polyurethanes. It acts as an inhibitor of the enzymes cyclooxygenase-2 and aldose reductase, which are involved in inflammation and the metabolism of carbohydrates, respectively. Furthermore, Crotononitrile possesses antifungal activity and is also able to inhibit the growth of certain types of bacteria.
