Carmustine is a member of the antineoplastic nitrosourea compounds. Carmustine can perform both alkylating and carabamoylating action and owes part of its cytotoxicity to its demonstrated ability to produce interstrand DNA cross linking. In addition, this compound has been documented as an inhibitor of glutathione reductase, trypanothione reductase, and lipoamide dehydrogenase (DLD).
