Carbamazepine is a sodium channel protein inhibitor. Carbamazepine is a compound consisting of a planar ring and is of particular interest in studying sodium channel interactions and cytochrome P450 (CYP). Carbamazepine has been used in the study of sodium channels in neuronal cells. This compound is reported to bind within the inner pore of the sodium channel via affinity binding with the IV-S6 domain. Additionally, Carbamazepine is reported to be a mechanism-based inhibitor of CYP1A2 as this compound contains a planar ring reported to fit within the planar active site of CYP1A2. This compound is also noted to be an in vitro inducer of CYP3A4, the main human metabolizing enzyme present in the liver and intestine.
