Amiloride, 5-(N,N-Dimethyl)-, hydrochloride (DMA) is an inhibitor of the Na+-H+ exchanger (NHE) with stronger potency than the parent compound, amiloride (sc-3578). DMA and other amiloride derivatives have been employed in elucidating the dynamics and activity of the NHE. Inhibition of the NHE by DMA was demonstrated to protect against severe ischemia/reperfusion-induced cardiac contractile dysfunction by normalizing tissue Na+ levels and preserving contractile function recovery during reperfusion.
