QUICK LINKS

6-Methylchrysene (6-MC) is a compound encountered in various industrial and environmental sources such as diesel exhaust, cigarette smoke, and petroleum products. It belongs to the class of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are recognized as carcinogenic substances. Recent years have witnessed extensive research on 6-Methylchrysene, primarily focused on its potential health implications, particularly its association with cancer. As one of the methylated chrysenes (MeChry), 6-Methylchrysene acts as an aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonist. MeChry compounds, including 6-MeChry, are significant constituents of cigarette smoke and have been categorized as possible carcinogens to humans. Metabolically, 6-Methylchrysene undergoes transformation into reactive metabolites capable of binding to DNA and inducing mutations. These mutations have the potential to trigger cancerous changes within cells. 6-Methylchrysene exhibits potent induction of cytochrome P450 enzymes, which leads to an increased production of reactive oxygen species. These reactive oxygen species can inflict DNA damage, adding to the mechanisms by which 6-Methylchrysene contributes to carcinogenesis.
