4-Phenylphenol (4-hydroxybiphenyl, 4-HBP) is a 4-arylphenol compound with weak acidic properties that acts as a precursor for the production of various antibiotics and antifungal agents. It is present in numerous plants, fungi, and bacteria. It readily dissolves in water and alcohol while being insoluble in most organic solvents. In scientific studies, 4-Phenylphenol has been employed to investigate the impact of environmental pollutants on living organisms. Moreover, it exhibits potent antioxidant properties, enabling it to counteract free radicals and safeguard cells against oxidative harm. Additionally, 4-Phenylphenol has demonstrated inhibitory effects on certain enzymes, including cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, which play roles in inflammation. Furthermore, this compound has been observed to interfere with the activity of numerous other enzymes, such as cytochrome P450, which participates in the metabolism of drugs and other xenobiotics.
