4-Methylumbelliferyl-α- D-galactopyranoside is a fluorogenic substrate for α-galactosidase, yielding a blue fluorescent solution upon cleavage. 4-Methylumbelliferyl-α- D-galactopyranoside is useful in differentiating species within the family of Enterobacteriaceae and in the localization of α-galactosidase in plants. Fabry disease studies employ 4-Methylumbelliferyl-α- D-galactopyranoside in assays to evaluate α-galactosidase deficiencies. The hydrolysis product of 4-Methylumbelliferyl-α- D-galactopyranoside is 4-MU, with an emission maximum at 445 nm.
