MDL-28170 is a cell permeable selective inhibitor of Calpain 1, a Ca2+-dependent cysteine protease which has been implicated in apoptosis of immune cells as well as neuronal cells. MDL-28170 also inhibits cathepsin B. Additionally, MDL-28170 has been shown to be able to cross the blood-brain barrier and inhibit brain cysteine protease activity, therefore potentially protecting against cortical neuronal damage. MDL-28170 is also proven to prevent anoxia in murine optic nerves. MDL-28170 has been shown to attenuate depression in myocardial contractile performance that occurs during reperfusion following cardiac ischemia.
