Transport and Trafficking

Transport proteins facilitate the movement of a chemical across a biological lipid membrane. Transport proteins use either passive transport, in which no energy is required because movement is in the same direction as the electrochemical gradient, or active transport, in which energy input is necessary for movement against the electrochemical gradient. Active transport proteins fall into one of three categories: symporters, antiporters, and uniporters. Trafficking proteins help to mediate the movement of other proteins or small molecules accross and between cells.
