CNQX disodium salt is a potent and competitive GluR (kainate/quisqualate (non-NMDA) receptor) antagonist. It also shows antagonism of the NMDA receptor at the glycine modulatory site. It is a more water soluble form of CNQX. In addition, it is a non-competitive antagonist of the AMPA receptor. It binds to this receptor and blocks the binding of glutamate to the AMPA receptor, thus preventing the activation of the AMPA receptor. This prevents the release of glutamate, which is an excitatory neurotransmitter, and leads to a decrease in neuronal excitation. In vitro, CNQX disodium salt may act to inhibit the activity of cAMP-dependent protein kinase A, as well as the activity of protein kinase C.
