(-)-Bicuculline methobromide is the N-methyl methobromide salt of bicuculline, a competitive antagonist of the GABAA receptor. The N-methyl derivatives (-)-Bicuculline methobromide and (-)-Bicuculline methiodide (sc-200485) are more water-soluble and stable than the parent compound and have been employed as specific GABAA receptor antagonists analogous in function to the free base of bicuculline. Non-GABAA-specific behavior divergent from the activity of the parent compound has been reported with (-)-Bicuculline methobromide and (-)-Bicuculline methiodide. Both compounds are observed to block afterhyperpolarizations mediated by Ca2+-activated K+ channels in dopaminergic neurons.
