Batimastat is a potent, broad spectrum MMP (matrix metalloprotease) inhibitor, with IC50 values of 3, 4, 4, 6 and 20 nM for MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9, MMP-7 and MMP-3 respectively, that has demonstrated antiproliferative, anti-invasive and antimetastatic activity. Batimastat also demonstrated the ability to reduce tumor size and inhibit metastasis in mice implanted with human colon carcinoma cells. Batimastat, also known as BB-94, is a synthetic compound that serves as a non-peptide inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). It is extensively utilized in laboratory experiments to explore the involvement of MMPs in various biological processes. Batimastat is a small molecule designed to specifically bind to the active site of MMPs, thereby hindering their ability to cleave substrates. Notably, it exhibits a strong affinity for MMP-2 and MMP-9 and surpasses other MMP inhibitors in terms of potency. The interaction between batimastat and the active site of MMPs induces a structural alteration in the enzyme, effectively impeding its substrate cleavage function.
