β-Defensin 137, also known as DEFB137, is a protein that belongs to the β-defensin family, a group of antimicrobial peptides that are a fundamental component of the innate immune system. The β-defensins are characterized by their ability to disrupt the cell membranes of a wide range of pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, thereby contributing to the host's first line of defense against microbial invasion.The gene encoding DEFB137, DEFB137, is one of many in a cluster of defensin genes. β-Defensins are typically small, cationic peptides rich in arginine and cysteine residues. The cysteine residues form disulfide bonds, which contribute to the peptides' characteristic beta-sheet topology. This structural motif is essential for the peptides' stability and their ability to interact with and penetrate microbial membranes.

DEFB137, like other β-defensins, is thought to be predominantly expressed in the epithelial cells of the respiratory and urogenital tracts, as well as in the skin. These tissues are frequently exposed to environmental pathogens, and the expression of antimicrobial peptides like DEFB137 is an essential aspect of their protective function.In addition to their direct antimicrobial properties, β-defensins have been shown to possess immunomodulatory activities. They can act as chemokines, attracting immune cells to the site of infection, thus recruiting and activating various components of the immune system to respond to invading pathogens.
