β2-AR Activators

The class of β2-AR Activators represents a collection of chemicals that mainly act as agonists, directly activating the adrenoceptor beta 2. These agonists operate through binding to the β2-AR, instigating G-protein activation and an array of subsequent cellular effects like smooth muscle relaxation. While some of these activators, such as Epinephrine and Isoproterenol, are more universal, binding to multiple types of adrenergic receptors, others like Terbutaline and Albuterol are more selective, targeting only β2-AR. The long-acting members of this class, including Formoterol and Salmeterol, provide an extended period of activation, binding directly to the receptor and maintaining their effects over a longer duration. On the other hand, short-acting agonists like Albuterol and Salbutamol offer rapid, but temporary, receptor activation.

Notably, many of these activators have a wide-ranging impact on various physiological systems due to their primary mechanism of direct receptor activation. For example, Ritodrine is known for its ability to relax uterine smooth muscle via direct β2-AR activation. Procaterol and Fenoterol are also direct agonists that primarily induce bronchodilation by stimulating β2-AR.
