Oxiconazole Nitrate is an antifungal agent. Clinically, it is typically administered in a cream or lotion to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch and ringworm. Oxiconazole nitrate is an imidazole derivative and functions by inhibiting ergosterol biosynthesis, which is critical for cellular membrane integrity in fungi. The azole component of oxiconazole nitrate inhibits the enzyme that performs the demethylation steps in the biosynthetic pathway that synthesizes ergosterol from lanosterol.
