PCSK1N Inhibitors

PCSK1N inhibitors encompass a range of compounds that indirectly affect the activity of PCSK1N through modulation of PCSK1 or related regulatory processes. PCSK1N serves as a natural inhibitor of PCSK1, a protease involved in the maturation of a wide array of precursor proteins, including hormones and neuropeptides. By targeting PCSK1 directly, certain compounds including HIV protease inhibitors can reduce the functional necessity for PCSK1N, as they decrease the active PCSK1 available to be inhibited. Serine protease inhibitors could also exert off-target effects, potentially altering the protease landscape within the cell and indirectly impacting the role PCSK1N plays in regulating PCSK1 activity.

Other compounds that can be PCSK1N inhibitors do not target PCSK1 or PCSK1N directly but may affect the metabolic or regulatory pathways that ultimately influence PCSK1N function. Certain inhibitors have impact on pancreatic beta cells and can lead to changes in the metabolic state of the cell, thereby influencing PCSK1 activity and PCSK1N's role within the cell. Others, by modulating PCSK9, could indirectly affect cholesterol metabolism and thus have downstream effects on PCSK1 and PCSK1N due to altered cellular states.
