Among the most studied processes involving histamine is the immune response to foreign pathogens. Release of histamine is triggered when the cellular membranes of the basophils and mast cells where histamine is stored are bound by IgE antibodies. Upon release, histamine binds to a class of receptors called G protein-coupled histamine receptors, inducing a multitude of effects that vary depending on the specific receptor and location. These effects include increasing capillary permeability to white blood cells and select protein as part of the immune response. Histaminergics include compounds that can stimulate or antagonize this response, and are useful for investigating further effects of histamine in physiological systems.
