QUICK LINKS

Doxycycline Hyclate, also called doxycycline, is an antimicrobial tetracycline that acts as an inhibitor of a wide range of matrix metalloproteinases. It has been observed to significantly decrease the levels and activity of metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in corneal erosion studies. Rheumatoid arthriitis studies indicate that Doxycycline Hyclate can block the degradation of type II collagen, and not type I collagen, as well as down regulate the expression levels and activity of MMP-8. Reports suggest that Doxycycline Hyclate blocks collagen activity and in smooth muscle studies increases smooth muscle cell adhesion, and changes the reorganization of fibrillar collagen matrices and cell migration. Additionally, Doxycycline Hyclate has been observed to alter the expression of apicoplast genes in Plasmodium falciparum, and inhibit tissue formation in rat tissue studies. Doxycycline Hyclate is also known as Doxycycline hydrochloride hemiethanolate hemihydrate, Atridox, α-6-Deoxy-5-hydroxytetracycline, and (4S,4aR,5S,5aR,6R,12aS)-4-(Dimethylamino)- 3,5,10,12,12a-pentahydroxy- 6-methyl- 1,11-dioxo- 1,4,4a,5,5a,6,11,12a-octahydrotetracene- 2-carboxamide hydrochloride hemiethanolate hemihydrate.
