QUICK LINKS

Dichlofenthion is an organophosphate insecticide that functions as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It acts by irreversibly binding to the active site of acetylcholinesterase, preventing the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This leads to an accumulation of acetylcholine at the synaptic cleft, resulting in continuous stimulation of the postsynaptic receptors. As a result, dichlofenthion disrupts the normal functioning of the nervous system in insects, leading to paralysis and ultimately death. At the molecular level, the chemical structure of dichlofenthion allows it to interact with the serine residue at the active site of acetylcholinesterase, forming a covalent bond and inhibiting the enzyme′s activity. This mechanism of action makes dichlofenthion effective for studying the neurophysiology of insects and understanding the mechanisms of acetylcholinesterase inhibition.
