QUICK LINKS

Ametryn is a selective herbicide that functions by inhibiting photosynthesis in plants. It acts by blocking the electron transport chain in photosystem II, specifically binding to the QB-binding niche of the D1 protein. This binding prevents the transfer of electrons from QA to QB, disrupting the flow of electrons and ultimately leading to the inhibition of photosynthetic electron transport. As a result, the herbicide causes a buildup of reactive oxygen species within the chloroplast, leading to oxidative damage and ultimately cell death in susceptible plants. This mechanism of action makes ametryn effective in controlling a wide range of broadleaf and grassy weeds in various agricultural and horticultural applications. Its specificity for photosystem II in plants may be useful for weed control in experimental and agricultural contexts.
