Diethyl 2-phenylethyl phosphonate is a reactant for the preparation of 1,3-diketones, beta-keto esters, and beta-keto phosphonates via 1,2-addition of carbanionic nucleophiles to cyclic vinylogous acyl triflates, followed by ring-opening fragmentation, claisen condensation and carbon-carbon bond cleavage. It is used as a reagent in the synthesis of phospholipids, which are essential components of cell membranes. Diethyl 2-phenylethyl phosphonate can interact with enzymes and other proteins that contain nucleophilic groups, leading to the formation of covalent bonds.
