Memantine hydrochloride is a medication utilized to treat Alzheimer′s disease and other types of dementia. Acting as a low-affinity, uncompetitive antagonist of NMDA receptors, this drug effectively alleviates symptoms associated with these conditions. It has undergone successful clinical trials and is currently accessible in numerous countries. Memantine hydrochloride functions by binding to NMDA receptors, impeding the influx of calcium ions into the cell. Consequently, it mitigates the harmful effects of excitotoxicity related to Alzheimer′s disease and other forms of dementia. Moreover, studies have demonstrated that memantine hydrochloride reduces amyloid-beta peptide levels in the brain, a substance implicated in the development of Alzheimer′s disease.
