Cellular (c-) Jun and c-Fos proteins are the major components of the leucine zipper-dependent, heterodimeric AP-1 transcription factor (1,2). AP-1 binds the cis region of genes that regulate processes including cell proliferation, embryonic development, vascular smooth muscle cell growth, and apoptosis (1-3). Activation of c-Jun occurs upon the phosphorylation of Ser63/Ser73, and dephosphorylation of one or more C-terminal sites at Thr231, Thr239, Ser243, and Ser249 (5-7).
