Chlorin e6 is a naturally occurring chlorin used as a photosensitizer. Chlorin e6 has been examined as a nanotechnology delivery tool. It is a promising compound for medical and scientific research due to its ability to selectively target and damage specific cells or tissues while leaving surrounding tissue unharmed. It has been used in cell culture studies to study the effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on cell viability and cell metabolism. Chlorin e6 has also been used in a variety of biochemical assays, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and Western blotting. Chlorin e6 may act to induce a variety of biological effects, such as cell death and gene activation. It has also been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells.
